Within the last year or so over 4500 Christians have fled Pakistan to travel to Thailand. Often travelling in unsafe boats, and paying their life savings to people traffickers they have arrived in Bangkok to find themselves arrested and imprisoned in detention centres.
The reasons for Christians fleeing Pakistan are numerous including the notorious blasphemy law, frequent bomb and mass mob attacks on Christian communities, untouchable status, ‘honour’ killings and a total lack of equality in society.A recent report published by ‘The Movement of Solidarity and Peace’ a Muslim NGO based in Pakistan stated that each year over 700 Christian girls are kidnapped, raped and forced into Islamic marriage. As a result Pakistani Christians are leaving their county in droves.
In September 2015, David Alton travelled to Bangkok to meet with the migrants and to take up their cases with UNHCR and authorities within Thailand before going on to visit schools in Burma, supported for many years by the Epiphany Trust. Please follow this link to read David’s account.
