School Funding
In 1997, the Epiphany Trust began supporting a school for underprivileged and disabled children. The school is situated in Welimada, central Sri Lanka, and is linked to the Baptist church in Bogowantalawa run by Pastor Sylvester Joseph, a church which is involved in a wide range of community projects.
Poverty is rife in Welimada and prohibitive school fees and transport costs often mean that children are
denied the oopportunity to attend school, even though they have a desperate desire to be educated. The school at Welimada is unique in the area in that it provides free transport for all who need it, together with a free lunch – a meal that can’t be afforded by many of the childrens’ parents. The school concentrates on basic maths and language but also encourages vocational learning.
Over teens of years, Epiphany’s funding has paid teachers’ salaries, provided teaching materials, equipped a new kitchen and covered general maintenance costs.
