Maw
Poe Klo, like Maw Khee, is in what is called the “Special
Area” of Karen State. In this is because there is an agreement
between the Burmese Army (SPDC), the Democratic Karen Buddhist
Army (DKBA) and the Karen National Union (KNU) to jointly run
the area. However, it is only the KNU, through our resourcing,
that funds the school.
As with Epiphany’s other schools in insecure
areas, our partners, the Karen Education Department (KED), cannot
visit this school themselves. The District Administrator ensures
that the resources that the KED have bought in Thailand are
transported by villagers from Maw Poe Klo to the school.
Epiphany funds all the educational resources
required for the school to operate and medicines for the students
when they are required. We also provide a school uniform for
the students, so that they have a sense of common identity and
because many of the children would otherwise only have one set
of clothes.
This
year, the School Committee has requested funds to construct
a new roof on the school building. Although this will mean a
substantial increase in the school’s budget for 2008 –
2009, it will mean that the educational experience of the students
will be improved.
The KED is trying to improve the level of teacher
training in this school. Many teachers, especially deeper inside
Burma, have only had themselves a limited education, however,
their enthusiasm ensures that they will pass on all they know
to the students under them. We are supporting the KED as they
do this.
