Lay
Kaw Htee is a small farming village deep inside Burma, in an
area controlled by the Burmese Army (SPDC) and the Democratic
Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA). As the area is insecure, the school
sometimes stops if the SPDC and DKBA mount an operation locally.
If the SPDC enter the village, the villagers leave for the jungle
and then return when the Burmese Army has left. The school then
continues to function.
Its location makes it difficult for even our
local partners to visit the school. This means that they work
through a local District Administrator, who can travel in the
area easier than an outsider would. Parents, teachers and the
wider community are all involved in running activities in and
outside of school. Both pupils and parents are very committed
to the school and many families reside near the village just
so their children can attend.
We have recently increased the level of our
grants to this school which will enable the school to have more
educational resources and ensure that its teachers can be paid
appropriately. This will also improve the level of training
that the teachers receive. All resources for this school need
to be transported for five days on foot, having been bought
in Thailand. This makes resourcing schools inside Burma more
expensive than it would be otherwise.
The
school committee has recently requested funds to improve the
quality of their buildings, to enable them to provide better
education during the rainy season.
Although this school works in an area where
trouble can flair quickly, the fact that it is functioning and
children are being educated gives hope for the future.
